Make Jesus Famous
Sermon text: Luke 3:16-17 John the Baptist was massively famous in Israel around 30 AD. Yet he knew his mission. He was a forerunner of the One to come. He was to prepare the people’s hearts for repentance. When the people began to question whether John may be the Messiah, he wasn’t coy about it at all. He pointed them to the One who was truly the Messiah.
What’s Your Mission?
Sermon text: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Every follower of Jesus Christ has a mission. Certainly we have the overall mission given to the church, to make disciples. We have a mission as a part of a local church. But we also have a personal, individual mission. This mission will definitely line up with the larger missions of Christianity and our local body of believers. But no one else will have a mission just like you do. Do you know your mission?
Laser Focused
Sermon text: Luke 9:51 Jesus was not caught by surprise when He was arrested in Jerusalem the week after He entered the city so triumphantly. He knew why He was arrested and what the punishment would be. He had told His disciples repeatedly that He would be killed in Jerusalem. He also told them He’d rise again. But for all that He knew He would go through, He was totally focused on completing His mission.
The Year Ahead
Sermon text: Hebrews 12:1-3 Every one of us has been given a mission by God. In order to be all that God intends for us to be, we must rid ourselves of any distractions and sins which hold us back. We have the example of those who’ve gone before us to encourage us. But our greatest example is without a doubt Jesus Himself. We need to keep our eyes solidly on Him so that we don’t become discouraged.
When God Calls, Part 2
Sermon text: Judges 6:25-35 In the second sermon of the series on Gideon, we focus on stepping out when called. Gideon’s experience shows that there are a number of real possibilities when a believer heeds God’s call. Changes may be needed, either internal or external. Furthermore, one’s commitment to God could put them at odds with others. On the other hand, some people may actually be attracted to the mission God has ordained.
Lessons from a Donkey
Sermon text: Mark 11:1-11 On the first Palm Sunday Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem. This was in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. We really don’t consider the donkey much in the whole panorama of the triumphal entry narratives. But we can learn a lot from this humble animal used by our Lord.
They Know (Joshua 2:1-14)
Chapter 2 of Joshua focuses on a harlot named Rahab. God would use this woman greatly, but she is introduced in Scripture as a frightened pagan. It’s probably reasonable to say that just about every Christian has a few “Rahabs” in their life. And you can be fairly certain they know a lot more about us than we realize.
Staying Focused (Acts 20:22-24)
God never promised that the Christian life would be easy. Jesus certainly experienced this, as did the apostle Paul. But regardless of the circumstances, we need to keep our eyes on why we’re here. It also helps to realize that God’s mission is bigger than any one person.
