The Promised Light

The Bible is chock full of references to light and darkness. Many times these are in reference to spiritual realities. Light denotes holiness and good, while darkness is sin and depravity. Several of these light and darkness passages are prophecies of the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ Family Tree (Matthew 1:1-17)

Matthew’s gospel begins with a long list of names. It’s tempting to just skip over this list. Don’t do it! These names tell us a great deal about Israel’s history. But it goes much deeper than this. These opening verses in Matthew also reveal much about God’s plan of salvation.

What God Values (Exodus 20:1-17)

If we want to be faithful to God, it helps to know what He values. And what better place to start than the Ten Commandments. But the commandments (and the law as a whole) are actually only minimums. Jesus expects much more from His followers.

Real Worship (John 4:21-24)

Our finite nature tends to make us want to localize our worship of God. Many think that He can only be worshiped in certain places. But Jesus makes it very clear that God can be worshiped anywhere, anytime. In God’s eyes there are no places more sacred than any others.

Living by the Book (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

God gave us the Scriptures so that we could know Him and live for Him. The Bible is the best selling book of all time. But how many have actually read it? And reading the Bible is only the first step. We must heed what it tells us and let it lead our lives. When this becomes a reality for us, we will find we need it more and more.

The Power of God’s Presence (Isaiah 6:1-8)

Words cannot adequately describe Isaiah’s vision of the throneroom of God. What we do know is that he was confronted with God’s awesome holiness and power. Compared to this, Isaiah recognized his sinful condition. But God readily cleansed him and prepared him for service. Chances are you will not experience a vision like Isaiah’s. But if you are a true follower of Jesus you you can know God’s power and presence personally.

God’s Go-Live Date (1 Corinthians 15:3-8)

God planned before time began to send Jesus to save the world from sin. The Old Testament both shows how far into sin mankind can go. But it also is chock full of prophecies concerning the coming Messiah.
